InFlow Provides Insight into Social Networks

Valdis Krebs at OrgNet has developed InFlow, a leading Social Network Analysis [SNA] software tool completely implemented in LPA WIN-PROLOG. SNA is a mathematical method for 'connecting the dots' and allows us to model, map and measure complex, and sometimes covert, human groups and organizations. SNA has recently gained prominence in both business and intelligence circles due to its ability to yield insight into the way people in disparate organizations interact. Find out more here!

Transmission Network Analysis to Complement Routine Tuberculosis Contact Investigations

In the paper, the authors examine the feasibility and value of network analysis to complement routine tuberculosis (TB) contact investigation procedures during an outbreak. They reviewed hospital, health department, and jail records and interviewed TB patients. Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were genotyped. They evaluated contacts of TB patients for latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB, and analyzed routine contact investigation data, including tuberculin skin test (TST) results. Outcomes included number of contacts identified, number of contacts evaluated, and their TST status. They then used network analysis visualizations and metrics (reach, degree, betweenness) to characterize the outbreak. Read the article here!

Social Capital: the Key to Success for the 21st Century Organization

"In the 20th century, the human resources (HR) function became quite adept at managing human capital – defined as the skills, knowledge and experience of individual employees within the firm. Just as HR was gaining competencies in this arena, the new economy came along and moved the goal posts. It is no longer sufficient to manage individual assets. The HR professional of the 21st century must manage inter-connected assets1 of the firm!" Read the article here!

Cassandra aids Software Engineers

Cassandra is a research platform developed by KnowGravity Inc. in Zurich, Switzerland. It is assistant-based and guides the users through their tasks in business, systems and software engineering. It analyses project data from many familiar UML®-based CASE tools, generates the appropriate questions or proposes the next steps in order to move the process forward. Cassandra's anatomy can be compared to the architecture of an operating system that provides basic services to various applications (Cassandra's Application Agents) and offers interfaces for various stores (Cassandra's Interface Agents). Cassandra is 100% implemented in WIN-PROLOG; find out more here!

You can download a detailed technical appraisal of Cassandra from here.

Loma

Loma is a web based expert-early warning-system that analyses common landfill operational problems, faults and accidents. In addition, Loma provides advice on how a landfill manager can prevent these problems, and in case of occurrence, on how to lessen the impact of their consequences. You can find our more by reading the article "Fault tree analysis and fuzzy expert systems: Early warning and emergency response of landfill operations" here!

Neds

NED-2 is a Windows-based system designed to improve project-level planning and decision making by providing useful and scientifically sound information to natural resource managers. Resources currently addressed include visual quality, ecology, forest health, timber, water, and wildlife. ED-2 implements a goal-driven decision process that ensures that all relevant goals are considered; the character and current condition of forestland are known; alternatives to manage the land are designed and tested; the future forest under each alternative is simulated; and the alternative selected achieves the owner's goals. AKT5

The Agroecological Knowledge toolkit (AKT5) software is developed by the University of Wales, Bangor, in conjunction with the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Edinburgh University. The AKT5 system is primarily concerned with gathering local ecological knowledge (LEK). Local ecological knowledge refers to what people know about their natural environment, based primarily on their own experience and observation. It allows representation of knowledge elicited from farmers and scientists or knowledge abstracted from written material. Find our more here!

AKT5 is being widely used by farmers in Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho, South Africa, as well as Latin America and Asia. Find our more here!

ProtoThinker

ProtoThinker is an innovative computer program designed to stimulate thinking about thinking. It contains a simple model of an exceedingly complex object - the human mind. Through conversational interaction with an 'artificial' mind, the user explores the capabilities of real minds. There is far more to the program than could possibly be explained in these web pages, so we encourage you to explore the program on your own (you can download a version of the program from the PT web-site) and to discover the various ways that people are using PT - as the language and logic center of our artificial persons (like "Iris") and to help raise questions about the nature of the human mind. Find our more here!
